The devastating effects of the Second World War have strongly underlined the question of human rights. On 10 December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This historical document sets a “common ideal” for human society. Drafted under the leadership of Eleanor Roosevelt, this document is divided into 30 articles, which guarantee the basic rights and freedoms of every human being.
In 1950 the United Nations adopted Resolution 423(V) which urged all nations to celebrate International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
The Human Rights Act in India came into force on 28 September 1993, under which the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on 12 October 1993. This commission is supposed to look after the issue of protection and promotion of human rights. Besides this, provisions as Articles 14, 19 and 21 in the Indian constitution protect the fundamental rights.
Human Rights Day gives everyone the right to gain equal rights and justice. It is a day where children and youth are taught about their rights. This day gives us awareness of all the human rights violations around the globe. Several events are conducted on this day in schools, colleges, and communities. These involve creating posters, writing poems, performing dramas, and many more.
The UDHR has 30 articles, which assure the individual of liberty, security, education, health, and cultural rights. The document is translated into more than 500 languages and is one of the most read documents worldwide.
The UDHR was in place for 75 years, but its principles are still not fully implemented. Inequality, discrimination, and injustice exist around the world.
