Bodhi Day is observed annually on December 8 in Japan and Western nations. It commemorates the historic spiritual practice of Siddhartha Gautama when he attained enlightenment 2,500 years ago and became known as the ‘Buddha’ or ‘Awakened One’. In Japan, it is called ‘Rohatsu’. After adopting the Gregorian calendar, it started being celebrated definitively on December 8.

However, the Bodhi Day date changes each year according to the lunar calendar. For Buddhists, it is the ‘actual’ Bodhi Day. In 2025, it will be on January 7 according to the lunar calendar.

Prince Siddhartha’s life was replete with royal luxuries and splendor. However, he soon confronted realities like sickness, old age, poverty, and death. It ignited within him a fierce inquisitiveness about finding the right meaning of life. He stepped out of the palace when he was 29 years old and embarked on intense penance and meditation in quest of enlightenment.

He sat under a massive pipal tree today known as the Bodhi Tree, at a place called Bodh Gaya in northeast India. He then vowed that he would not arise until enlightenment was achieved. After sitting for 49 days in stern meditation at the age of 35, he gained enlightenment and thus became the ‘Buddha’.

In his meditation, Siddhartha saw how the world is interconnected and why all beings suffer. He found that the main cause of suffering is our desires and our attachment to things. He presented this experience as the Four Noble Truths:

The secular Bodhi Day falls on December 8 while the lunar Bodhi Day falls on the 8th day of the 12th month of the lunar calendar. Just like Easter Day, the date changes each year. That is part of the rich cultural diversity that defines Buddhism.

Bodhi Day does not only represent enlightenment pursuit, but also teaches how essential it is to be aware, compassionate, and self-reflexive. The day directs us toward life’s uncertainties and shows the path forward into peace. Whether Bodhi Day falls on December 8 or on the lunar calendar, its main aim is to make everyone aware and in harmony.
