European Day of Languages 2024: Every year on September 26th, we celebrate European Day of Languages. There is a strong desire to express and promote linguistic diversity, raise awareness of the value of language learning, and preserve Europe’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage. It provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate multilingual culture through European traditions while also introducing people to new languages and cultures. Thus, the event was created through the collaborative efforts of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
Europe has 24 official languages. There are more than 200 regional and minority languages spoken on the European continent. Linguistic diversity is an important aspect of European cultural heritage. The European Day of Languages promotes language diversity and encourages preservation efforts. Today, it inspires people of all ages to learn languages and provides the opportunity to recognize that language is more than just a means of communication; it is also a means of learning new cultures and ideas.
The European Day of Languages is an annual event held at the end of the European Year of Languages, established by the Council of Europe in 2001. The goal is to make people realize how valuable it is to know one or more languages, to promote the rich cultural and linguistic diversity that characterizes Europe, and to encourage people to learn throughout their lives. The campaign encourages national education authorities and teachers to take a positive approach to language learning.
Liergas, in collaboration with eTwinning, will hold a competition for primary and secondary teachers during the academic year 2024-2025. This community is made up of online schools from all over Europe, allowing teachers and students to participate in language-learning activities together. Ireland’s schools have won three European Day of Languages competitions, demonstrating their creativity and innovation.
European Day of Languages 2024 Theme
The 2024 theme “Languages for Peace” recognizes that Europe’s linguistic diversity is a means of peace and cooperation. Languages create cultural bridges between peoples, leading to harmonious coexistence and peaceful life in societies, aside from being purely a means of communication.
