New Year’s Eve falls on December 31, being the last day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar. On this day people bid farewell to the past year and welcome the coming year. This day gives us an opportunity to cherish the achievements, difficulties and memories of the past year, as well as create a festive atmosphere for the beginning of the new year.
It has also been related that the significance of New Year’s Eve lies with the Gregorian calendar. Nowadays, it is being implemented globally. Pope Gregory XIII developed this calendar in 1582. This calendar relies on the solar year in place of the lunar-based one the ancient Roman calendar followed.
The Gregorian calendar, as developed, was mainly aimed at providing the right organization of time. It was a corrected version of the Julian calendar as proposed by the Roman emperor Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Sosigenes of Alexandria, a Greek astronomer, was instrumental in establishing the Julian calendar.
Pope Gregory XIII implemented a new system on October 4, 1582. This meant that the day after October 4 became October 15 directly. This was done so that time could be calculated more accurately. But what happened to the people whose birthdays fell between 5 and 14 October is still an interesting question.
Under this new system, the new year began from January 1, whereas earlier it used to be celebrated on April 1. There was no astronomical motive behind this decision but only in the name of “Janus”, an old Roman god. Janus used to be the god of new things and the keeper of doors.
On the evening of December 31, people around the world get drenched in a festive atmosphere. Various social gatherings are organized on this day, which include dancing, singing, delicious food, and fireworks. People stay awake all night to welcome the New Year.
New Year’s Eve gives us an opportunity to understand the importance of the cycle of time. It inspires us to reflect on our past and make new resolutions for the future. Also, it brings new energy and hope in life.
Although the tradition of celebrating New Year on January 1 is a gift of the Gregorian calendar, New Year is celebrated at different times in different cultures. For example, according to the Indian calendar, New Year begins on the Shukla Pratipada of Chaitra month. According to the Chinese calendar, the Chinese New Year is celebrated in January or February.
